2009/10 Salmon in the Classroom - 9/13/09
Now that school is back in session, it is time to proceed with the 2009-2010 "Salmon in the Classroom" program. Last year CVTU sponsored Dave Green's Environmental Studies class at Brandon Middle School in Ortonville, Mi., with the result of 65 salmon raised to a 3" size, which were released in the Clinton River at Yates Park this past May. This year CVTU is sponsoring the "Salmon in the Classroom" program in Rodney Pierson's 7th grade class at Sashabaw Middle School in Clarkston, Mi. and Gail Miller's 8th grade class at Scripps Middle School in Lake Orion, Mi. Each school will receive $1000 worth of equipment needed to raise salmon eggs provided by the Michigan DNR. The students in the classroom, supervised by their teacher, will take on responsibilities such as monitoring water temperature, changing the water and filters, and of course, feeding the fish. The state will also provide a curriculum guide for the teachers that will connect the project with the math and science programs at their respective schools. The equipment will be set up in time to receive the salmon eggs in early November. Check this area of the CVTU web site for photos and student updates of the project as it unfolds during the school year.
